On June 28, I had the incredible opportunity to be a featured DJ at the Apple Store in The Grove, Los Angeles, as part of their “Fridays at the Apple Store” series. This event was particularly special, as it coincided with Pride Month—a time to celebrate love, acceptance, and the vibrant LGBTQ+ community.
As I set up my equipment, I felt a mix of excitement and gratitude. Being recognized as an influential figure in the LGBTQ+ community meant so much to me, and I was eager to bring my energy and passion to the crowd. While I anticipated a dance party atmosphere, the reality was a bit different. Most people didn’t take to the dance floor—instead, they bobbed their heads while shopping, creating a unique vibe that blended music with the shopping experience.
Despite the more laid-back setting, the energy was electric. I loved watching people enjoy the music as they browsed through the latest Apple products. It was a delightful reminder that music can enhance any environment, even when it’s not the focal point.
One of the highlights of the evening was meeting a little girl who approached me with wide eyes. She told me that I inspired her to be a DJ one day, and in the most adorable way, she expressed that she wanted to be “DJ Keez” for Halloween—the best way she could pronounce my name, DJ Keelez! Hearing her say that was a heartwarming moment and reminded me of why I love what I do. It’s not just about the music; it’s about inspiring the next generation to express themselves and pursue their passions.
As we transition into October, which is LGBTQ+ History Month, I find myself reflecting on the importance of representation and empowerment within our community. This month is dedicated to celebrating the history, achievements, and contributions of LGBTQ+ individuals. Each moment spent sharing music and connecting with others is a step toward honoring that legacy and fostering a more inclusive world.
Thank you to everyone who came out and made the evening unforgettable. I can’t wait to continue sharing my music and hopefully inspire even more future DJs in Los Angeles as well as around the world! Let’s keep the spirit of Pride alive not just in June but throughout the entire year, especially as we celebrate LGBTQ+ History Month.
